PUERTO MADRYN

Wildlife nature

The Valdés Peninsula is one of the most outstanding wildlife reserves in South America, home to Southern Right Whales (Eubalaena Australis), southern elephant seals (Miorunga leonina), and southern sea lions (Otaria flavescens).

The barren Peninsula boasts the lowest point on the South American continent, the Salina Grande and Salina Chica salt flats, which sink 132 feet below sea level, making it one of the world's lowest continental depressions.

In late winter, the whales come to these shores to mate and give birth, staying until the end of November. Watching them play in the water is a delightful sight, as they dive, cavort, breach, tail, and spray water all around.

Visitors can experience nature and wildlife up close, without sacrificing comfort. This is why Puerto Madryn and the Valdes Peninsula are considered natural sanctuaries.
